      <image:title>About Us</image:title>
<image:caption>On March 9, 2019, Hawaiʻi-based artist Kapulani Landgraf hosted a viewing of the installation for project participants, some of which are pictured here, including Rodrigues, Cruz, along with Mālama Mākua Kiaʻi Emily Kandagawa and Ulu Eli. More than 80 attended, and their connection with the work—and with each other—was palpable. For more on the project and the artist click on this image.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is the entrance to Mākua Valley. Pull up to the gate, where an army personnel will check photo identifications to make sure the names on the photo identifications are on the cultural access roster. Once names have been verified by the army personnel, continue through the gate to the parking lot just inside where you will leave your vehicle during the access. The gate will be closed during the access, so all vehicles in the parking lot will be secure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Moʻo are not simply adorable geckos, but instead, they are fierce creatures that probably have more in common with a dragon than a lizard. This image ("Hiʻiaka and the Moʻo" by Linda Rowell Stevens) depicts two entities that are central to Mākua lore: Pele's sister, Hiʻiaka, and a moʻo. While Hiʻiaka did kill a moʻo earlier in her epic journey to fetch Pele's lover from Kauaʻi, going through Mākua on the way back to Hawaiʻi Island, she did not kill the moʻo of Mākua, who you can read about below.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The military occupation of Mākua Valley features prominently in this award-winning documentary by Anne Keala Kelly. Quick facts about the U.S. military in Hawaiʻi as found on the filmʻs website, nohohewa.com: - Hawaiʻi is one of the most militarized groups of islands in the world. - The military controls over 20 percent of all land in the Hawaiian Island chain. - The military population makes up over 11 percent of the state of Hawai’i, as opposed to less than one percent of the U.S. population. - The U.S. Army secretly tested chemical, biological, and deadly nerve gas agents in Hawai’i watershed/forest reserve areas, facts repeatedly denied but later confirmed. - Currently 7.1 million live rounds of various weapons are fired annually on sacred Hawaiian lands at the Pōhakuloa Training Area (PTA) on the Big Island of Hawai’i. - More than 400 square miles (250,000 acres) on Hawai’i Island may contain live arms and other military toxins and should be considered military hazard areas. - In 1995, there were 405 toxic sites in 122 military facilities statewide.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Mākua in Academia</image:title>
<image:caption>Shima derives its title from a Japanese term that is most often translated into English as “island.” But – as significantly – the term also refers to other types of space that are regarded as insular by the communities that inhabit them. While many of the spaces referred to as shima in Japanese usage are islands, defined by their encircling waters, others manifest different types of insularity and/or imagination of space. Shima addresses social, cultural, environmental and conceptual aspects of various types of island, peninsular and otherwise insular coastal and shoreline communities, their relationship to the oceanic, estuarine, deltaic, riverine and/or lacustrine environments that substantially define them and the manner in which various types of engineered waterways and bodies of water constitute cultural landscapes in terrestrial locations.</image:caption>
